Our analysis
From the survey result, we can see how most people are actually fine talking about this issue openly. But yet, it is fully understood that some people might be uncomfortable due to the sensitivity of this topic. Although there are a lot of different factors of the cause of adolescent pregnancy, the most highly answered is the lack of education and relationship between each individual whether in their family or friends environment. According to our survey, the answer to the mental effects to the mother is mentioned more than the physical effect. From the result, we can see how adolescent pregnancy causes more risk of mental illness or mental effect to the mother. Most of the respondents of our survey still think that adolescent pregnancy is a taboo especially in Indonesia, that is why this kind of issue is rarely being brought up. Due to the lack of awareness, teen moms were viewed more dominantly to the negative side. But nonetheless, people are still giving support and accepting their mistakes. But also, in some areas, they viewed this issue as very normal because it’s a part of their cultural tradition. From the responses we can safely say that even a lot of people will be disappointed if their family or friend becomes pregnant at a young age. Some will even be angry and be ashamed of their family or friends. Which supports the results from our initial research, due to adolescent pregnancy a lot of people, especially in countries like Indonesia will be excommunicated or hidden away from society. Someone even went as far as to say that adolescent pregnancy is disgusting. However a lot of people, especially those from the younger generation are a lot more open minded. They say that they feel empathetic; even though they might be disappointed they will still choose to support their family or friends through such a difficult time.
We can observe that there is quite an equal divide between all of the options regarding whether or not it’s ok to have an abortion if a young woman is sexually harassed. Considering that abortion is considered as a heavy crime in a lot of countries, especially religious ones, it’s not surprising that the almost 50.9% of the respondents reacted quite negatively to abortion. From those answers, it’s not surprising why the number of illegal abortions are so high. However a lot of people also agree that it’s somewhat ok to have an abortion if the baby is caused by sexual harassment. Which may be caused by the sympathy people feel for the woman as she may not want the child in the first place.
From the survey results, we can see that there is a huge range of emotions, from happy to terrible. Almost 20% of people feel that adolescent pregnancy is okay, and one person even said that they’re even happy about it, and another said that they are impressed by the mother’s strength. There are also other respondents that don’t really care and are not sure how to feel. And quite a big chunk of people said that it depends on how the mother feels, if the mother’s happy they will be too and vice versa. However over 47.1% of people say that they feel shame and sympathy towards the mother, even pity. This further proves that in a lot of countries adolescent pregnancy is seen in a negative light, it causes people to be looked at with shame and pity.
From the responses above we can see that a majority of people think that on a scale of one to ten 3-7 are being done about this issue. Meaning that even though this issue is being handled quite well, not enough is being done to raise awareness and possibly prevent this issue from getting worse.
We can conclude that some people still agree with adolescent pregnancy for their own personal reason. We’ll never think that they’re wrong because every person is entitled to their opinion. Whether we have a different opinion or not, we now know for certain that not all people disagree with this issue. This may even raise the question, is this really an issue.
From this statistics, we can see that people know that it is an issue that needs to be resolved. Sadly, some people might be in danger of being uneducated about this issue. In our case, every 138 respondents, 5 people will say that it’s okay for a woman to undergo adolescent pregnancy. The people that might’ve said maybe will most likely consider that the woman is free to live a life that she desires or if she’s ready to be a mother, then she can be one.
Based on this statistic, we can conclude that most people think that the unreadiness of a young individual will be the cause of problems or why it’s a problem. We can also say most people disagree with adolescent pregnancy because of their concern that the mother isn’t fully prepared to be a mother yet. Some other factors are that it leads to a big risk of health issues. Some of them also said that it’s better for a teenager to work on their future, it is also against their personal moral/religious values.
From this table, we can say that most people think that education is the way out of this issue and it is the key to resolving this issue. Even in further studies, our secondary resources also said that it is through education that this problem can be resolved. Our interviewees also had a common answer which is education itself. From this we can conclude that education has a primary role in one’s life because it influences many parts of their life and with good knowledge and education, the risk of having these kinds of issues are less likely. This is exactly the reason why we try to educate and raise awareness about this problem in our society.
